Working on my new iPad
My iPad first entered my life on January 9, 2010, from the Apple Store at Crabtree Valley Mall. It was a surprise getting it, since I had always thought it would be neat to have one, but I hadn’t had any serious plans to get one. That all changed when we visited a friend of my husband’s, who had an iPad of his own and who let me play with it for a while. We were hooked, and the very next day we paid a visit to the nearest Apple Store on our way back.
The idea was that we would use the iPad for photo storage and Internet use on vacation trips, or whenever we would be out for a while and near a wi-fi area. However, it’s also become my primary web surfing tool. I didn’t turn on my laptop all day yesterday!
Three days later, and I still love my iPad. It is the ultimate in portability, allowing me to access the Internet virtually anywhere I need to. I can check my email, visit websites, and even do my blogging, as I’m doing this very moment. I can also read tons of PDF files at my leisure, and that along with web surfing is a great experience on my iPad compared to my laptop.
Typing is slow; I’m down to half my usual speed but it’s only been 3 days so I can’t expect much from the learning curve. There are also a number of things I can’t do on my iPad, namely design websites using Dreamweaver and Photoshop, but there is an app (Splashtop Remote) that will allow me to control my computer which has that software on it. The Safari browser doesn’t have easy tabbing, which is my most favorite browsing tool, but I installed an app called Terra which allows that and it’s what I’m blogging through right now.
The battery life on the iPad is amazing. I haven’t had to take it below 90% yet; by that time I’ve been on the computer too long and need to get up for a break or do some work anyhow. I love a computer that sips energy. It makes me feel like connecting a solar charger to it someday, and then I would have completely free energy for all my computing needs. Well, except for Dreamweaver and Photoshop, but maybe in the future those will be supported somehow on the iPad. These multi-touch screens are definitely the wave of the future as far as interacting with computers go.
